The Donkey

Gone But Not Forgotten

There have been three participants to win the Donkey on their first AND only event. Andy Everson in 2010 (Omaha), Jesse Smith in 2018 (Cleveland) and Mike Costello in 2019 (Pittsburgh). Out of sight, but not out of mind. Gone but not forgotten. Here’s to hoping Mike makes an appearance in 2020

A Family Affair

Winning the Donkey award runs in the family for these select few. Unfortunately they know all too well about the contents of toolbox.

  • The Goodnature’s – Larry (2002 Albany) and Nate (2012 St. Louis)
  • The Skaar’s – Neal (2007 Detroit) and Al (2005 St. Louis)
  • The Everson’s – Bob (2006 Oklahoma City) and Andy (2010 Omaha)

Collusion?

As seen above, the Skaar father/son duo of Neal and Al have already made history as family Donkey’s. To add to this, they are also both members of the Hall of Fame. Along with 2017 HOF inductee Larry Goodnature and 2019 HOF inductee Chris Lull, they remain the only members of the HoF to have also tackled “The Box”.

Worst to First

Tony Abbott made history by being the first and only participant to come in dead last (2011 Philadelphia) and then stand upon the top of podium two years later (2013 Des Moines). Unfortunately the championship will be outweighed by the heavy hitting toolbox.

One For the Record Books

Similar to Cy Young’s 749 complete games and 511 wins, Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 point game and Joe DiMaggio’s 56 game hit streak, we have Andy Everson holding the lowest point total in the history of the draft. With a pathetic 27 points, this record could last the test of time. No wonder he never showed his face again.
